Walking in Memphis

I know I complained in a previous posting about the lack of international news in the Kenyan newspapers. The Kenyan radio, however, in its morning news broadcast, does summarise the international news after it has gone over, in detail, the national news.

Today one of the news items was relating to the devastating floods in Memphis, Tennessee. The news presenter talked about how the Mississippi was rising and that people were having to evacuate their homes. Then after the Kenyan weather forecast, the presenter handed back to the Radio DJ.

And of course, as his next song, the Radio DJ played Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn. Given his unrelated commentry before and after the song, I don’t think it was even intentional. Although, given the lyrics of the song, the irony did not pass me by:

Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain

I am trying to work this one out! Could it be that the DJ was that insensitive, or did he wish his audience to “admire” his ability to link songs with reality?! Astrid, even in the most dire of situations, you still manage to get me to laugh!
